Fly-Fishing Adventures around Montana
McKinnie Fly Fishing Outfitters of Montana is based in Philipsburg, MT. We are lucky to have Rock Creek and Georgetown Lake in our backyard. From Philipsburg we can easily access the Bitterroot, Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers; all Blue Ribbon Trout Streams that hold at least 2,000 wild trout per mile. Philipsburg is a historic mining town, offering unique activities for the entire family and is centrally located between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.
We also provide fly-fishing adventures on the world famous streams surrounding the Bozeman area. From there, fishing on the Madison, Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers are easily accessible.

I was born with a fishing pole in my hand. My Dad loves to tell everyone, “John was two months old on his first fishing trip!” As a kid growing up in Glenwood Springs, Colorado I spent almost every weekend sitting on the banks of our favorite lake ,or river, ‘slayin the trout’ using lures, worms and powerbait. Once I turned 12 my Dad, and some of his buddies, introduced me to the sport of fly-fishing. I was fortunate to learn the basics on Colorado’s famous Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers, but I endured a slow start with the fly rod. Finally, I started to get the hang of it and fly-fishing eventually became my passion. I love the sport because of the beautiful places it takes you, for the quality time in the outdoors and because of the amazing people I have spent time with on the water.
Throughout my 20’s, fly-fishing was only a hobby while I was working in the Health & Fitness Club industry in Fort Collins, Colorado. While in Fort Collins, I improved my skills and knowledge through outings on the Green River, North Platte River, Arkansas River, Frying Pan River, Gunnison River and the many lakes of the North Park area. When I hit my 30th birthday I made the decision to turn my hobby, and passion, into a career and headed north to Montana. Since moving to big sky country in 2011 I have been ‘living the dream’ while fishing some of the most famous rivers in the world and learning how to be a professional Fishing Guide. Becoming a guide has developed a passion for teaching and an appreciation of introducing people to the beauty and serenity of Montana.
